Badminton – A Backyard Classic

The amount of fun you can have while playing has made badminton a backyard classic, similar in nature to tennis. Whether it’s a game here or there or having tournaments with friends and family members, badminton, a backyard classic, is something worth getting into this summer. What Is Needed to Play?

Just like tennis, badminton uses rackets and a propelled object to play. There is a net in the middle and the goals are relatively the same in that you need to get the propelled object over the net. The rackets look quite a bit different, though, and most people consider the propelled object to have a funny name, the shuttlecock. Additionally, the shuttlecock can be known as the bird or birdy. It looks basically like a ball with feathers sticking out the back of it in a funnel shape. However, it’s the grace of the sport that has made badminton a backyard classic.

How to Play

Badminton does not require as much speed as tennis, so it’s an activity that is often enjoyed by people of any age and is not limited only to those who are extremely fit. The rackets are smaller but with a longer handle, and it does not require as much speed or force to hit the shuttlecock. It is a game of finesse and grace. But what are the rules? Two teams, either one on one or two on two, are placed on each side of a net in an area similar in size to a tennis court. The game is played until one team reaches 21 points. Three games are what it takes to make a match. Whether you serve or not, you can get a point for each rally that is played if the other team misses or performs a foul. One of the things that makes badminton a backyard classic is the fact that the rules are quite simple.

Purchasing Equipment

High-quality badminton equipment can be purchased quite readily at most sporting good stores. Although you are not likely to need really high-quality rackets until you get the hang of the game, some people like to start out with better quality. However, you can also get cheap sets at local department stores and at sporting stores that will help you get a taste for the game before you decide to invest a lot of money in it. No matter what you decide to do, ensure that you know what you intend on buying before you go into the store. This will prevent you from making a purchase that is not right for you.

Danica To Dazzle

Danica Patrick is well on her way to making a name for herself in NASCAR. She entered the NASCAR Nationwide Series last year by running a part-time schedule with JR Motorsports. As a newcomer to the Nationwide Series she hasn’t exactly set the world on fire but she does hold her own and is showing definite signs of improvement. Some say she is doing it the “right way” by continuing to run a part-time schedule in the Nationwide Series this year. Granted she can’t dedicate herself full-time to NASCAR as she is still running her regular IndyCar Series schedule. Perhaps this is a good way to start out trying a new venture but at some point if she wants to make the leap to the Sprint Cup Series she is probably going to have to commit herself full-time to stock car racing.

Patrick seems to draw the fans but reviews have been mixed. Some say that she uses her gender too much. One report alluded to her temper being a result of “her time of the month”. Last year Kyle Petty made a comment along the lines of “if she sells a few t-shirts and hats she should consider it a successful season”. A bit condescending but a large part of NASCAR is the driver’s popularity with the fans. If she can draw the fans, then NASCAR makes money and everyone is happy. It is a business after all. Dale Earnhardt Jr is a prime example of this. He has won races but let’s face it, he does not have the most stellar driving record when compared to other drivers. A lot of his popularity is derived from the Earnhardt name which is still selling tickets today. That being said, perhaps Danica’s popularity comes in part from her gender. However on the flip side she was paid a compliment by current Sprint Cup Series owner and driver Tony Stewart who stated he believes she has the talent to make it in NASCAR.

Patrick’s bourgeoning NASCAR career is fueling the feminist movement in many ways. She is going against female stereotypes and is a role model for women everywhere. She is breaking into a sport that has long been known as a “boys club” and is becoming successful doing it. She strikes a balance between contending with the male drivers and being comfortable enough to show her feminine side without worrying that she won’t be taken seriously in the garage.

How To Make Your Personal Bow And Arrow

Many people who love archery would like to create their own bow and arrow. In order for us to make one, we also need a little planning. If we make a plan, we can create a better bow and arrow. In order for us to make an archery equipment, we need to have a piece of wood, arrow heads, sandpaper, string, grip, cloth tape, shaft, fins, small hand saw, and a glue gun. One way to create a perfect tool is to examine the real thing. Below are some of the instructions that we can follow.

1. Be sure to choose a wood that is flexible enough. Some of the wood that are commonly used in making the bow include mulberry, bamboo, oak, lemon tree, black locusts, hickory, and teak. It is much easier to cut and clean a wood that is still young compared to the hardened wood. Try to search for an archery store and examine the bow. Check how heavy and soft the surface of the wood.

2. Now that we have an idea about how to make the bow, then we can use the information that we saw from the local store. Be sure to choose a wood that also bends properly, otherwise it will not be a perfect bow. Almost every wood material tends to bend, choose the one that has the right bend. Cut the wood using the small hand saw.

3. In order to make the bow a strong one, make sure that the center or the grip is thick enough. We can also shave off both ends of the bow using a knife or a carving tool. The center should be thick, and the end segments should be more flexible. Use the sandpaper to refine the carved ends of the bow.

4. After finishing the bow, we can start preparing the notches. Make sure to give allowance on the measurement of the notch and not exactly on the length of the bow. We will use the excess notches on both ends of the bow. Strings are often made from different materials like nylon, hemp cord, rawhide, sinew or fishing line. Make sure that as we connect the string to the bow it does not stretch too much.
